10 Ways to Have More Fun

Let’s face it: Life can be boring. You wake up too early, work, or go to school, run errands, clean, go grocery shopping, and just when you think you’re fully stocked on toothpaste and toilet paper, we find yourself making yet another run to the drugstore. The never-ending list of things to do can feel tedious. It’s natural to crave a little bit more fun, some adventure, but where do you begin? How you inject some more fun into everyday life? Here are 10 ways:

1.Get some new reading material.

If you traditionally read books, get a magazine or newspaper subscription. If you’re into fashion, why not subscribe to Vogue Japan? Read a book about a topic you know nothing about. Try psychology, philosophy, or arts and crafts. Get a subscription to Audible.

2.Eat something new for breakfast every day for one week.

Don’t make it complicated by trying to be fancy, but rather, switch it up. Try pumpkin waffles, scones, frittatas, or biscuits. Make a bowl of noodles, a popular breakfast food in Asian. Grab something delectable from the bakery. As you take each bite, savor it. Repeat the mantra: I welcome change into my life.

3.Start a conversation with someone new by giving them or her a compliment.

It’s easy to work with so many people that you can hardly remember their names, much less engage in a meaningful conversation. Go out of your way to compliment someone new in the elevator, or during your lunch break. Ask them if they’d like to join you for coffee, or if you can bring them a cup of coffee.

4.Turn an acquaintance into a friend.

I bet you have a social circle filled with people who you’d call acquaintances, meaning, you’re not in the habit of spending your Saturday with them, but you’ve known each other long enough where you share details about your personal life. Take the first step, (which is the hardest) by inviting that person to an event (a group event is the best way to make the transition). Ask them to join you for a ladies’ night, a barbecue, or a concert.

5.Go to hot pot.

What’s more fun than hot pot? You dip a bunch of foodstuffs into a steaming vat of delicious broth. It’s the perfect combination of activity and eating. Gather everyone you know and go out for hot pot. Enough said.

6.Be someone else.

It’s too easy to wear the same clothes, eat the same food, and go the same places. Pretend you’re someone else for the day. You could be anyone: Martha Steward, Gwenyth Paltrow, Kanye West, or Snoop Dog. Where would they eat? What would they do? Pretend you’re someone else, and embrace it! If your’e Martha, dress in a button-down shirt, and make a pie. Shop for new bed linens, and reorganize your closets. If you’re Kanye, be extra daring. Apply for new jobs. Boast about how great you are. Paint your walls red or canary yellow.

7.Be outrageously generous.

It may not sound like a lot of fun, but gift-giving (especially gifts that are homemade) can be a great way to have more fun, because you get to delight in the happiness (and often surprise) of the recipient. Oprah knows that to give is better than to receive, which is why she’s famous for being a major gift-giver. Think about someone in your life (maybe a young person, or a family member who you don’t see often), and send them a surprise gift! Wrap it in delightful fun, and be so bold as to request that they record their response as they open the gift, so you can save the video to watch in the future.

8.Go somewhere fancy.

It’s easy to get trapped in the mundane, which oftentimes, means dinner at the same cheap Thai restaurant and coffee at the same local bakery. If you want to invite more fun and adventure into your life, try to go somewhere fancy. Now, fancy doesn’t have to mean expensive. There are plenty of reasons to put on a blazer, or a sparkly dress, such as going to a fancy tea house, or having coffee at a luxurious hotel. Search your local area for fancy establishments that offer affordable events, such as this mansion in Rhode Island that has music events for $30 or this tea parlor in New York, where you can experience a proper tea service for $34.

9.Throw a themed party.

A friend of mine once threw a flannel party. Another had a gratitude party, during which she sang songs and shared with the guests about how much we meant to her. Consider gathering your pals to have watch a marathon of a particular show (complete with themed snacks), or throw a spa party for the ladies. Maybe you want to host a Friendsgiving, poker night, or game night. When you have a theme, people get excited, as the event feels more festive. Also, having a theme builds anticipation, as guests need to gather appropriate outfits and snacks to bring.

10.Go out dancing.

There are few things as going out for a night of dancing. It can be a pain, because nights out require planning, commuting, or making plans to hire a babysitter, but it’s absolutely worth it. Put it on the schedule, and find a venue that plays the sort of music that gets you excited, be it 80s, 90s rock, or EDM. You can go to a fancy club, or a low-key bar with a tiny dance floor. All that matters is you get out, let loose, and have fun!

These are just some ways to have more fun. The key is to make having fun a real priority in your life and to try new things, even if you feel embarrassed or silly. The more willing you are to step out of your comfort zone and try new things, the more exciting adventurous you’ll find yourself having.
