Release Resistance to Find Happiness

Here is the great joke of my life: I prefer quiet and solitude and yet, have created a life in which I interact with almost 200 people a day, in one of the most populated cities in the world. While I would prefer to write and contemplate, life has brought me countless interactions, traffic, and hustle.

I used to resist this - so many people all the time. I used to think things like, If only I could get fifteen minutes to myself, just to decompress in the middle of a busy workday, but lo and behold, someone would show up, needing something, or just wanting to chat. I'd smile, but inside, I'd wish I had just a few minutes of silence. My thoughts about what my life should look like brought me nothing but unhappiness. It's what our minds do: perceive life through a series of shoulds, if-onlys, and I'd be happy ifs.

So here's the key: When we are willing to release thoughts of resistance, we are left with only peace.

The moment we stop wishing the moment were different, we make room for it, and the feeling of pushing against ceases. When that happens, all that remains is a deep, abiding feeling of peace. We let the Universe put us in any situation, around any person, and we accept it. That doesn't mean that we don't take steps towards creating a different future (visualizing a new city to live in, or a new job), but what it does mean is that we trust that wherever we are is where we're meant to be at that moment, because it is part of our path. Our journeys will lead us to different places, and we will form new relationships, but at that very moment, all is well.

At any moment, we are exactly where we need to be.

It may not feel like it, but it's true nonetheless. That relationship, that small apartment, that job - while it may be a stepping stone - it's a perfect match to where we are at that moment in our life. Once we accept that every circumstance, person, and second, is orchestrated by the creative energy that holds the sun in place and keeps the earth in rotation, we can let go of resistance and surrender our lives to God.

Take a breath. Repeat: All is well. This is exactly where I need to be right now. The universe doesn't make mistakes; even the most challenging circumstances serve us in unseen ways. Joy comes when we give up resistance; when we surrender our shoulds, and when we let life have its way with us. Peace is accepting the current moment and allowing it to be exactly as it is.
