How to Make Your Life Suck Less

fun_whimsical_girl.jpg

There are times when we survey our lives and find that our greatest wish is that we could just step out of them entirely. If only I knew then when I knew now, we tell ourselves. We’d do things differently: pick a profession better suited to the lifestyle we desire, save more money, or start healthy habits at a young age. That’s not how it works, though. We wake up to find that, if we could, we’d step out of lives completely and embody someone else. We’d easily say goodbye to our jobs, houses, city, state, relationships, and start over.

If we could, we’d hit the reset button.

But we can’t. So what do we do? How do we make our lives suck just a little bit less? Outside of figuring out how to get a whole body transplant or move to a different planet, how do we begin anew when it can feel like our life is buried under the rubble of bad choices, dead-end roads, and the stories of who we used to be?

While we can’t reset our entire life, we can press the energetic reset button, meaning, we can work on shifting our perception, energy, and mindset. We can choose to show up differently than we have in the past, and we can choose to become a different person - the sort of person we’ve always wanted to be - even if our external circumstances don’t change; though, when we do decide to align with our best selves, it’s only matter of time before our life circumstances do reflect our internal changes.

So, if you’re ready to hit the reset button, here are 6 ways you can do it:

1.Start your day with positivity and gratitude.

It’s so easy to roll out of bed, dreadful of the day to come. It takes determination and a clear decision to reset one’s mindset to start the morning by sitting quietly, journaling, and focusing on what is working out in life. While one hundred things might be going wrong, there’s always something positive to we can think about, regardless of how small it is. It might be as simple as that panini we look forward to at lunch, or that movie we’re going to rent on Netflix. The key is: It’s not about the journal itself, it’s about getting into a positive emotional state early on; it’s about not bringing the emotional clutter of the previous day into the present. When we train ourselves to focus on the positive, we set ourselves up for all of the tasks we have to accomplish that day, and we make it possible. When we start off with negativity, it’s a decision to perpetuate more negativity with no willingness to break the cycle.

2.Release your unconscious crap.

We all have unconscious crap. Mountains of it. We have programming from our parents, negative patterns, and past trauma. On a deep, unconscious level, most of us believe that we’re not good enough; it’s hard to make lots of money; love equals pain; and we’re not worthy of perfect health and happiness. On a deep, unconscious level, we’re punishing ourselves for being too smart, not smart enough, unable to fix our parents, and because of the trauma we suffered as a child. We were bullied, abused, and we witnessed dysfunction on some level. Our parents struggled in their marriage, financially, and with their health. We pick up patterns and ways of thinking, and they drive us, without us knowing. In order to press the reset button, we need to release the blocks we have that are keeping us stuck. There are several ways to do this; here are just a few ways:

  • practice EFT (also known as tapping)

  • reread spiritual, positive texts, such as A Course in Miracles to reprogram your subconscious mind

  • visit a healer, such as a reiki practitioner, or a shaman

  • visit a somatic therapist (somatic therapy clears blocks and trauma in the mind, as well as the body)

3.Leap before you’re ready.

You’re never going to feel ready to make massive changes in your life. It’s always going to be terrifying to make changes, and it’s going to bring up feelings of uncertainty and unfamiliarity. When you adopt a new habit, make a shift, or start a new project, you have to commit to walking through your fears, rather than doing what most people do, which is to wait for their confidence to grow, or for some magical voice in their head to tell them the time is now.

Newsflash: If your’e waiting for a sign, this is it! Start that project. Open your own business. Change jobs. Start working out. Go ask out that coworker you like. Do it before you feel ready. Just do it. Stop putting your life on hold and go for it. Leap before you’re ready.

4.Pray like your house is on fire.

Let me just put it out there: If you only pray when you’re in trying times, you’ll never develop a relationship with God, and trust me, life is a lot easier when you have a relationship with God. Use prayer as a way to open up to guidance and state your willingness to listen. It’s when we open up and come to God humbly that we can clearly hear our intuitive guidance. Want to tap into your intuition? Pray. Not sure if you should take that new job? Pray. Want a relationship, but not sure how to manifest one? Pray. (Also, read the many articles I have on this site and learn how to manifest an awesome love life. Here’s one about How to Use Journal Writing as a Spiritual Practice.) When you feel lost in life, or when you feel like your life sucks, get in the habit of praying. Pray in the shower. Pray as you’re running. Pray as you’re brushing your teeth. Talk to God in your mind, out loud, and in your journal. Pray, get quiet, and listen to the guidance you are given. Tap into the wisdom of the Universe and trust that it’s serving your highest good.

5.Have a clear purpose.

What’s your reason for waking up in the morning? If you don’t have a purpose, you’ll be more prone to experience states of apathy and boredom.

Here’s the key: If you don’t have a purpose, you can always make one up. Stop overthinking it. Your’e not the Dalai Lama.

Your purpose can be something as simple and beautiful as spreading more joy, being creative every day, or having as much fun as possible. Your purpose can involve travel, having experiences, or creating something new in the world. It doesn’t matter what it is; the only thing that matters is that you have a purpose for your life, as that is the first step to clarity, creating a vision, and figuring out the next step to take.

These are just five shifts you can make to make your life suck less. Trust that you have the power to make these changes, regardless of what you’ve achieved in the past, or what people have told you otherwise. Press the reset button and change your life. Start with these shifts, and watch how your life transforms.
