The Cure for Procrastination
You just can’t seem to get washing those dishes, going to the gym, or working on your passion project, and so you’re looking for a cure for procrastination. You have so many things that you say you’d like to do - one day, perhaps tomorrow, or next week, but you just can’t bring yourself to do those things now. No, you’d much rather browse social media, or google cat memes. You decide that instead of building your website, what you actually need to do is browse the internet for a new purse, and actually, instead of going to the gym, what you really want to do is make a sandwich and top it off with a nap.
Chronic procrastination can feel like the plague; it’s a weight that you carry that can stop you from fulfilling your potential and creating a life that you love. But fear not, because I’ve got the cure, and it’s not what your mom, boyfriend, or best friend Patty is going to tell you; it’s a cure for your spirit, which is the only cure there ever is.
There are three steps to curing procrastination. The time it takes to complete each step is solely dependent on your willingness to let go of limiting beliefs and negative patterns.
If you really want to change your life and live from your Highest Self, it’s not only possible, it’s why you’re here on earth - to become the best possible version of yourself and love your life.
Here’s how you do it.
Step 1: Learn how to value yourself.
You don’t start that website because you don’t think you’re good enough. You don’t write those songs because you don’t think you’re good enough. You don’t put your art for sale online because you don’t think you’re good enough. You don’t go to the gym, because that’s what people who love themselves (and their bodies) do; whereas you have subconscious feelings of unworthiness, which manifest as procrastination, or self-sabotage.
On a subconscious level, you don’t believe you’re good enough, and it’s for this reason that you don’t take the steps necessary to create a life that you love. Why else would you choose to not follow your dreams? Why else would you do everything else but pursue your passions? It’s because some part of you doesn’t value your talents, abilities, and potential. It’s this part of you that you need to kill off. That’s right. You need to kill off the insecure part of yourself before you can actualize your dreams. I suggest you shoot her right in the head, but you might opt for something gentler, like placing a pillow over her face and going for a good ol’ fashioned suffocation.
There are several ways to value yourself more. One of the best ways is to repeat affirmations, or listen to affirmations as you sleep (I like this video, as well as this video). Step 2: Clear your mental real estate.
You can’t work on that book, because your house is cluttered, so your brain is foggy. You can’t start that business, because you’re fighting with your partner every week, and it’s exhausting. You can’t get into shape, because you’re consumed with the gossip you stir up with your group of friends, the passive aggressive nonsense you get involved in with your mom, or the mountain of debt you’ve incurred.
If you want to meet your goals, you need to clear your mental real estate. To do so, ask yourself a simple question: What do I spend most of my time thinking about? Where do the hours in my day go? What am I wasting my energy doing?
If you’re spending your lunch hour complaining with coworkers, instead of chipping away at your goals, you’re never going to make progress on your dreams. If you binge watch reality television every night, and the only thing on your mind is if this housewife is going to reconcile with that housewife, then how can you expect to lead a great life? If you want to move forward, then you need to clear your mental real estate. Step 3: Clarify your vision.
What do you really want? You think you want a partner with a six pack, a six-figure salary, and a house in the Bahamas. (Who doesn’t?) Unfortunately, that’s the vision the world sells you; that’s the singular narrative of the “dream life.” The truth is that your soul chose to incarnate for the purpose of learning how to connect with others, spread joy, and fulfill your life’s work. So, if you’re a musician by nature, but you’re working as a secretary, you’re going to feel unfulfilled.
Taking steps towards your goals requires aligning your goals to your Spirit, which means that you forget about cliche dreams and look inward for what you’d really like to manifest in your life. Do you long for more connection and want to expand your social circle? Does your spirit long for a partner who’s mindful and on a spiritual path? Then why are you wasting your time dating atheists? They’re rich? They’re gorgeous?
So, one reason why you’re procrastinating is that you don’t have a clear enough vision, or, you have too many visions, and you need to pick one and focus on executing it.
Here’s the key: The clearer your vision is, the more you’ll find that you feel excited about it and stirred into action.
For example, if your vision is to “make more money,” this year, the vagueness of that statement might not stir up any genius ideas.
However, if your vision is to create a website to sell your art online and generate 10,000 this year, the specificity of that vision will inspire ideas. Out of nowhere, the Universe puts a course, or a book, on your path, which talks about digital marketing, or how to upgrade your packaging. If you’re unclear of what to do next, or, if you find that you just simply can’t take the next step, you need to ask yourself what it is that you really want. The solution to procrastination is to remove all of the blocks that are keeping you from living from your Highest Self, which, oftentimes, include a lack of self-worthiness, not enough mental real estate, and a foggy vision. Instead of trying to push through obstacles, or listening to motivational speeches, try reprogramming your subconscious mind by listening to affirmations, clearing your mental real estate by taking some inventory, and clarifying your vision. If you take these three steps, you will find that it’s easier to take steps to meet your goals, and you’ll actually want to do things like go to the gym, or wake up early, because everything that was keeping you from aligning with that high-vibrating energy was released, and all your left with is space - mental, emotional, spiritual, and psychic; from that place, it’s impossible to not generate great ideas and follow through. It’s metaphysical law.
